20 Franc Marianne Rooster Gold Coin

Seen as a representation of faith and hope since the medieval period, the rooster became an unofficial symbol of France and its positive advance as a nation. Known as Le Coq Gaulois or the Gallic rooster, it appears on one side of this celebrated coin. Upon the other side is a right-facing profile of Marianne, the personification of France and its classical liberal values including "liberty, equality, fraternity." These 20 Franc Gold coins were minted from 1899 to 1914 and the design was engraved by J.C. Chaplain.

The history of Gold French Roosters

Gold French Roosters embody the bold spirit of what was known as the Third French Republic, established after the defeat of Napoleon III in 1870. The reverse of these Gold coins features the Gallic rooster, which became the unofficial symbol of French tenacity and vigilance during the French Revolution. The obverse depicts a modified portrait of the Roman goddess Ceres, who among other things represented the abundance of the French nation. Minting of the Gold bullion coins began in 1899 and continued until 1914, when production ceased due to the start of World War I.
